Blog Tour + Giveaway: Blood and Bone by Don Hoesel

Blood and Bone Tour

Blood and Bone

More Archaeological Adventures from Popular Suspense Writer Don Hoesel. A decade after Serpent of Moses, Jack is married to Espy and back teaching at Evanston University. They have two sons, one of whom has cystic fibrosis. Despite this challenge, life is comfortable. But that all changes when the CIA, while combing through the papers of the late Gordon Reese, uncovers the secret of Elisha's bones. Jack's world is then turned upside down by an urgent call from his old friend Duckey, who's been alerted to the CIA's probing by one of his former contacts. Jack and his family escape from their home just ahead of the CIA, and he decides to do what he should have done long ago: recover the bones and destroy them. Except the bones aren't where he left them. So now Jack is in a race, for the last time, to find the bones. And he's not the only one. Pitted against both the CIA and an organization that will kill to protect their secrets, Jack and Espy follow hard-to-decipher clues across the globe before arriving in the catacombs of Paris for a final showdown that will either save their family--or tear apart everything they hold dear forever.

My Thoughts:  This was the third book in the series and I had not read the first two books. I did not know that there were other books previous to this one until there were references in the story. Fortunately, I did not feel lost when reading it. I actually found myself glued to the story and I enjoyed it.

The story ran fast with all of the twists. Jack's adventures reminded me a lot of Indiana Jones and National Treasure. It was fun to read how Jack and his wife Espy tried to track the bones so they could get their children. Every time they met a dead end, it had me wondering how they were going to get out of it. The suspense was also high because Jack and Espy where constantly being followed by men who wanted them dead. All of this was exciting.

Jack and Espy were interesting characters. Jack was the typical archeologist who was fascinated with the past and knew how to solve riddles. He did have a flaw, which made him a little realistic: a bad knee. Next, Espy was my favorite character. She was incredibly smart and brave. If it wasn't for her, Jack would not have gone very far in trying to find the bones. I came to admire her character tremendously towards the end.

Though this was a fun read, I cannot give it a perfect score. What bothered me the most about the story was how focused the characters were in finding the bones, especially Jack. Jack's children had been kidnapped and it was only mentioned a few times when Espy said she missed them. Jack was too busy and excited over the different finds during his adventure that remembering his children was not very prominent. If my children were kidnapped, they would constantly be in my thought sos to me this part of Jack was unrealistic. Other than that, I still enjoyed this book.

Overall, I enjoyed myself reading this book. It was quick and exciting. It made me want to read the first two books in the series. I rate it:
